Hold on - here is the bump and the SPIN OUT!
Play Ball or Gentleman Start Your Engines, USA Weekend set out to determine what sport is the REAL national pastime.
The USA Weekend has taken a WE REPORT YOU DECIDE approach in debating which sport is the REAL national pastime. In past issues, they compared in their words "our national pastime" (baseball) vs. the NBA and pro wrestling. This past weekend they took on NASCAR and in my eyes, THEIR national pastime lost!
I come from a baseball background. Honestly, as a child up through the 1994 season when the major leaguers went on strike, I was a die-hard fan and just as opinionated then about baseball as I am now about NASCAR. During those years, I fully agreed with the "Baseball, Hot Dogs, Apple Pie and Chevrolet" philosophy of life.
On August 12, 1994 GREED changed our national pastime and professional baseball players went on strike. The sad thing was it was all about money!
Baseball history showed that players, the great players, played baseball because they LOVED the game. It was not about the money or fame, it was for the love of the sport! On September 14, 1994 the owners declared that the World Series, one of the most cherished events of my childhood, was canceled. That day back in 1994, our national pastime became just that in my eyes, a time in the past.
Nine years later, almost to the exact day - the August 15th - 17th USA Weekend comes to us with the question, which is the REAL national pastime?
Baseball - still to this day is having fan attendance problems. HECK even in Detroit with a new stadium, they can't fill the seats. Last year, strike talk threatened to end the games again and let's face it, baseball players are not fan friendly anymore! It's all about the money STILL and attitudes are beyond this world. Is this the national pastime? Are we proud of this? Sorry Barry Zito, even chumming up to Dale Jr. doesn't change my mind.
NASCAR - honestly, I am not a NASCAR history buff! I enjoy the sport more today than I did in my early years. I now love watching the old races on SPEED and reading Mike Daly's stuff right here on racindeals.com to expand my knowledge of the past. This sport has overwhelmingly grown and I am sure the majority of drivers and team members in NASCAR today would do it without making a ton on money. It's not GREED, it's the love of the sport driving these drivers to race. YES! The NEED FOR SPEED!
In NASCAR you see fan loyalty, you see brand loyalty and even the drivers take notice of those of us who give our opinion. GEZZ, the USA Weekend asked Barry Zito from the Oakland Athletics what is his Must-click Web site was - he said guitartab.com. - some guitar web site, which I am sure is really nice, but what ever happened to a BASEBALL WEB SITE or some fan based site dedicated to the game of baseball? But - NO!
Same question asked of Dale Jr., he said - JAYSKI.com - YEAH BABY!
In my eyes, we have a new pastime and it's the world of NASCAR. 10 or 20 years down the road, people will be talking about NASCAR - not Baseball - LOOK OUT WORLD!
NASCAR PENALTIES
NASCAR has spoken and Jimmy Spencer will sit out the entire Bristol weekend. Not only that, he will need to fork out $25,000 and serve probation until the end of the 2003 season.
The $25,000 will be not be a problem for Jimmy because I am sure other drivers are sending him a check to put in the "I'm Jimmy and I punched Kurt FUND." Probation in my eyes is a JOKE and a COP OUT for NASCAR to say - "you're a bad boy!" But, HELLO, parking someone for a race or in Jimmy's case three races is SERIOUS STUFF!
Many of you know that Jimmy Spencer has been in the SPIN OUT ZONE many times in the past. I DO think he needs to be held accountable for his actions. But come on - is parking him really the right thing to do?
I agree with penalties and if you do the crime be prepared to do the time. But, NASCAR has been so inconsistent in dealing out penalties, I am not sure anyone knows what will happen if you scream or punch another competitor. Look at what happened last year with Tony Stewart. He punched a photographer an outsider, not a competitor and he was fined and never had to sit a race. In Jimmy's eyes and many others in the garage, paying a fine might have been worth punching Kurt to get the guy to SHUT UP!
Again, I think NASCAR is being a BAD PARENT! They need to put down some guidelines. NEVER, unless no other option is available should they need to park a driver. Instead, they can make life miserable for that driver or team. For example - make it known that if you DUKE it out with another driver, YOU WILL start the next race by serving a TWO-LAP black flag penalty. THERE! Now a driver can determine the REAL value of a punch. Parking someone is actually too easy. In most cases, the team will put another driver in the car, but by putting a guideline in place like making them serve a two-lap penalty at the beginning of the next race will make the driver MORE accountable to his team, owner and sponsor. Let's face it, if a sponsor or owner is tried of starting races two laps down, things will change without NASCAR stepping in at every altercation with a suspension.
Plus, just my two cents on Kurt - I like Kurt, but he has evil side and it came out last Sunday by saying over his radio that he wanted to damage Jimmy's car. In general, most drivers have an "evil" side some softer than others, well except maybe Johnny Benson who I do not think would harm his worst enemy. Out of all the young guns, Kurt seemed to be the most vocal and somewhat disrespectful to and against the veteran drivers. Many in the garage and it might even be safe to say the majority of the garage felt that Kurt got what he deserved. Through Jimmy, they did their own prosecuting.
NASCAR has made it their responsibility to change driver's personality. They changed Kevin Harvick and it has taken him a full year to turn things around. Tony Stewart has been muzzled and now they are attempting to slow down Mr. Excitement. SHOOT, you can't point a finger at another driver anymore or NASCAR will call you into the red truck or fine you. I miss the rubbing and finger pointing. I miss Wallace and Gordon and Tony and Robby yelling at each other! Where have those days gone? The road NASCAR is taking us in keeping drivers under control will lead us to a SOFTER GENTLER BRISTOL race!
I agree with Rusty Wallace when he said, "Everybody's got their face punched in occasionally. But nowadays there's no tolerance for it, the guys from NASCAR get all sideways about it. They've got the cops involved and they've got fines, and my God, it's crazy. We've got a real cleaned up sterile sport right now. Do I like it? Hell no."
This week's SPIN OUT goes to - INCONSISTENT NASCAR PENALTIES!
NASCAR should take a look at Dr. Phil's FIVE Steps to Disciplining Your Kids (In this case DRIVERS): 1. Commit Yourself - Is there a problem here NASCAR? 2. Be Realistic in Your Expectations of Your Child (DRIVER). 3. Define Your Child's (DRIVER's) Currency - Find out what your child (DRIVER) values 4. Give Your Children (DRIVER's) Predictable Consequences 5. Use Child-Level Logic (or Jimmy Spencer-Level Logic)
See Dr. Phil, I am sure someone would drive a Dr. Phil Dodge!
God Bless our Troops, our President and America!
Until next week, happy bumping!

Hold on - here is the bump and the SPIN OUT!
Remember back when you were a child and someone gave you money for your birthday? Boy howdy, that money sure burnt a hole in your pocket. I remember Dad reminding me not to spend it all in one place, but even his reminder never worked. I couldn't wait to get out and buy something.
Well, NASCAR signs a 10-year agreement with NEXTEL that includes a ton of cash and just like a kid in a candy store, they are out to change the world. It's all very suspicious especially when you look at the list the changes that NASCAR is reviewing. Let's visit a few of these changes. First, as we all know Toyota will be joining NASCAR. It has been announced that we will see a 2004 schedule change giving California Speedway a second race date. How did NASCAR determine this change? I guess it helps that the Toyota's USA Headquarters is located about an hour away from the California Speedway.
The future is approaching us faster than we may want! Fuel provider, point system, provisional system, schedule, racing back to the caution, communication provider and more speedway corporate naming right issues are just a few items I am sure we'll see coming down the pike. With many of those issues, I do feel NASCAR needs to make some changes. The point system is not working, the provisional system is a shame (Sorry Mr. Cope!) and I can see benefits to changing the schedule where it makes sense! But, one item that really concerns me is the fact that NASCAR is talking about scheduling races outside the country. Yes, rumors have NASCAR racing in Mexico, Canada and Australia.
WHAT?
I am sorry folks, I just cannot get behind this! Why would I support taking revenue and jobs away from the United States of America? If NASCAR visits Mexico City during the season, they will either subtract a race date from one of the regular tracks or add a new date resulting in a lost opportunity for a track currently waiting for a date. Tracks equal jobs, race weekend's equal money going into local economies and FANS loose out on going to a race. This bothers me!
Sometimes certain growth is not good. Canada and Mexico, who really do not support this country anyway, should catch it on the tube like those folks in Iowa! Talk about controlling cost, does NASCAR think that having 43 race teams with their equipment traveling to Australia will cut cost? I hope not!
This change it all attitude happening should stop. NASCAR should concentrate on the business at hand - what's happening on the track! If NASCAR wants to visit other countries, then do what the rest of us do, take a FREAKIN vacation!
POLITICS IN NASCAR
Should candidates be able to sponsor a race team? Should drivers voice their political opinions?
In general, I do not have a problem with it. FANS are very connected with their favorite drivers and if Michael Waltrip FANS follow his lead by buying auto parts at NAPA, I am sure the majority of his FANS support President Bush as Michael does.
But, what happens when a driver or a team, support a political candidate for whom you do not support? Does the driver change your opinion or are you able to separate their politics from your politics? I would guess if your firm in your beliefs you'd choose another favorite driver, one who believes in general with your opinions.
As we have seen in the past, drivers 100% support their sponsors. Could you imagine Elliott Sadler not supporting M&M's or Tony Stewart not marketing or believing in Home Depot? It just doesn't happen. The driver in our world of NASCAR is being hired by the sponsor to be a spokesperson or salesperson for their service or product. Kind of like the Dale Jarrett situation. I am sure Dale uses UPS and because he believes in Ford, he drives one and owns a Ford dealership. If Dale ran a George W. Bush Ford in a future race, my opinion is that Dale and Yates support George Bush. So, can I judge Dale as a person because he supports a republican? Of course you can. You can either continue to support Dale and Yates or find a new driver to support.
The 2004 election cycle is approaching and Roush Racing has Presidential Candidate Bob Graham as a primary sponsor on Jon Wood's Craftsman Truck Series #50 Ford. Bob Graham who I am sure is a really nice guy, is a democrat who holds a very low percentage of the democratic support. He voted against many of his democratic opponents by voting against them and President Bush on the Iraq war. Unlike many of his democratic opponents, Mr. Graham continues to vote against banning partial birth abortions and in South Carolina, Bob holds about 1% of the vote. He's not a real popular guy with the democrats.
So, if he is not real popular and he voted against the war in Iraq does that mean Jon Wood and Jack Roush agree with Bob Graham. I would have to say yes. If a driver and/or team 100% supports their sponsor then they believe in Bob Graham's stance and campaign. If not, then Jack must have needed a sponsor so bad that he took Graham on for nothing but pure greed. If this is the case, then future sponsors should question Roush's commitment on sponsorship alliance.
In my eyes, Jon Wood, Jack Roush and Roush Racing support Bob Graham for President. Because people tend to judge the character of a person by their politics and I totally disagree with Bob Graham's political agenda, I now need to evaluate why I support Roush Racing. Political sponsorships are unlike corporate sponsorships and by having Bob Graham on their truck as a sponsor, Jack has created a perception of what type of person he really is. For that, I believe Jack would have been better off leaving Bob Graham off the truck.
This week's SPIN OUT goes to - POLITICAL SPONSORSHIPS! I do see the fun in having a car for each democratic candidate. I wonder which car - the Dean Dodge, Sharpton Chevrolet, Kerry Ford, Gephart Ford, Edwards Dodge or Lieberman Chevrolet would punt the Graham Ford into political history. My money is on the Lieberman!
God Bless our Troops, our President and America!
Until next week, happy bumping!

Hold on - here is the bump and the SPIN OUT!
I have received many emails from those who have followed my column over the years wondering why I excluded "Quick Bumps" for The Spin Out Zone. Well, to be perfectly honest I think other Internet freelance columnist have done a great job of putting together nice quick opinions about the topics of the day. So, I felt that since my columns are long winded anyway, I would stay away from the Quick Bumps and use the space for hot topic opinions. However, I guess many of you find my Quick Bumps amusing and to keep the readership happy, let's get busy with some Quick Bumps!
QUICK BUMPS
A.J. FOYT: Excuse me Mr. Foyt, I do not think changing the car number on the Harrah's Dodge from 14 to 50 is going to help! I've heard of thinking "outside the box", but for heavens sake, maybe looking at who is driving the car might be a better start.
DODGE MOTORSPORTS: When asked about having Tony Stewart driving a Dodge, John Fernandez, director of Dodge Motorsports Operations, answered: "Actually we've got a great lineup of drivers that we're working with today and I don't know if Tony is under contract with Joe Gibbs right now, so we're not pursuing Tony at this point in time."
Well, HOLY COW thanks for the insight their John. First, Ryan Newman is the only Dodge driver winning races and your great lineup of drivers include Jimmy Spencer. He's not going to win! But, if I didn't know that Tony Stewart was under contract with Joe Gibbs, I would pick up a PHONE and CALL HIM. Heck, maybe slip him your number as you pass his Motorhome. You could talk to his friend who works with the #40 Dodge team to see if he could set up a "confidential no obligation meeting." JEZZZ! What in the world are you smoking!
JEFF HAMMOND: Regarding Jeff's trip to Finland to see World Rally Racing, Speed Channel reported that Jeff said "A long time ago, before all the safety issues, I rode with DW at Talladega. I sat behind him with only a helmet -- no seatbelts -- and rode over 200 mph for six to seven laps."
I'll be! This answers a whole lot of questions about Jeff!
COMMERCIALS: What the HECK! With all the technology, you'd think someone could come up with a way to watch a NASCAR race without some many darn commercials. How about a commercial ticker at the bottom of the screen OR a picture in picture concept so we can watch the race and commercials at the same time? In my eyes, 43 different commercials are circling the track during a race. Isn't that enough?
PETTY ENTERPRISES: Hear I go again! Okay Kyle, Scott Maxwell to drive the #43? Scott Maxwell to drive the #43? Scott Maxwell to drive the #43? HOLY MOLY, Scott Maxwell to drive the #43!!! Is this apart of a rebuilding plan Kyle? My gut hurts!
POCONO TRACK SECURITY
Let's see, as a nation we are sitting at an ELEVATED threat level in regards to Homeland Security. Local law enforcement has implemented measures to assist in protecting residents and racetrack security should be trained and ready for ANYTHING that would put FANS and/or drivers, teams at risk. Right? You would think!
Last weekend at Pocono Raceway, some drunken out of control maniac decided that he would accept a bet from some friends and run out onto the track during a caution, expose his REAR END to the Pocono crowd and run off into the area woods. Yes, he was apprehended, but you really have to stop and ask yourself, what if? What if he was out to hurt a driver? He did come close enough to make Jeremy Mayfield swerve!
Bob Pleban the Pocono Raceway spokesman said "Somebody went across down by Turn 1, hopped over the wall and was quickly apprehended, he's in lockup right now."
NASCAR would not comment on the incident, but we MUST ask where in the world was security? In my eyes, someone dropped the ball and all fun aside, this situation needs to be evaluated and the failure in security needs to be shared with other tracks to ensure the same mistake does not happen again. NASCAR and/or Pocono Raceway need to answer to somebody!
At the end of the day, all was fine. The drunken guy went to jail, but no matter how you write this up, last weekend proved that just like us, the security people were watching the race instead of doing their job!
TEAM RUSTY
Rusty Wallace is once again looking at a challenge. Going into last year, Rusty had won at least one race in the previous 16 seasons. One goal in 2002 was to win a race and keep the streak alive. Unfortunately, Rusty missed his chance and the streak ended.
Now it's 2003 and Rusty is outside of the Top 10 in Winston Cup Points. The Top 10 is a familiar place for Rusty, however at the end of every season since 1997 Rusty has been on the stage in New York with the other Winston Cup Top 10 finishers. He is no longer JUST fighting for a win, he is fighting an uphill battle to finish in the Top 10.
I am sure Rusty FANS are saying, "hey, it's Rusty and he'll get back to winning." But, not so fast! Rusty has not won a race in 83 tries. It wears on a driver and a team when you can't win. In Rusty's case, I feel that it's not Rusty. He seems to still have the same passion, the fire in the stomach to race. I see it in his eyes! Especially when his younger teammate is kicking his butt on the track in the same equipment.
Rusty is still running strong. But, it's like a piece of the puzzle is missing or not fitting. I think deep down Rusty FANS and Rusty himself knows exactly what I am talking about.
To be blunt, it's time for Bill Wilburn crew chief of the #2 team to go. He has made too many mistakes in the pits and this goes back to last year. He may understand car set-ups, but pit and race strategy he does not. Wilburn does not seem to understand how to win a race on fuel strategy and as we have all seen fuel strategy is winning races. The fastest car is not winning anymore, it is all about strategizing throughout the race and having the ability to make quick decisions that impact the outcome of a race. Bill Wilburn has failed at this concept.
Wilburn has also been shown up by his counterpart on the #12 team. Ryan Newman driver of the #12 Alltel Dodge won his 4th race of the year last weekend at Pocono Raceway. Rusty must be scratching his head wondering what in the HECK is wrong with the #2 Miller Lite Dodge team when so much information is shared with the #12 team, but the outcome is so different. Jeff Hammond hit the nail on the head when he scolded Bill Wilburn. In his weekly column, Jeff said, "shame on you Bill Wilburn. Your man hasn't won a race in over two years. He had a good racecar. Why not throw caution to the wind? Being up in the top ten in points is wonderful, but you've got enough time to scrap your way back up there by the end of the season. If I hadn't won in 82 races, I would darn sure be gambling."
Back in April, rumors in the garage had Bill Wilburn fired and replaced by Todd Parrott, Dale Jarrett's past crew chief. However, Penske Racing President Walt Czarnecki called the rumors "nonsense." Bill Wilburn went on record in April and said, "I know we haven't run well lately, but if we won a race, no one would be talking."
Well Walt and Bill, I've gotta tell you, people are talking because you have not won in 83 races! I also think you can no longer call anything nonsense!
Todd Parrott is no stranger to Rusty Wallace. A team consisting of a Wallace and a Parrott has been seen at a Winston Cup race before. I honestly think if things do not change on the track in Indianapolis this weekend, we'll see change off the track at Penske shortly! Bill Wilburn can contribute to the #2 Miller Lite Dodge team, just not as the crew chief. Make the change!
This week's SPIN OUT goes to - BILL WILBURN! Rusty, just give him the old father to son speech, you know the one - "this is going to hurt me, more than it's going to hurt you!" OR, "don't let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya" would work too!
God Bless our Troops, our President and America!
Until next week, happy bumping!
